With the curtain drawn, there’s nothing but a floor-to-ceiling window between you and a vertiginous view of the nightlife on Oranienburger Strasse — meaning guests are as close to the action as possible, and to passersby, they’re on display, aquarium-style, through the building’s futuristic aluminum and glass facade.

Not for wallflowers, then. But thank heavens for that thick curtain, for when the need for privacy takes over, and for modern glazing technology — that vast window is soundproof, blocking out the street noise and leaving the guest rooms eerily quiet. Chic contemporary furnishings, modern artworks and lively color schemes complete the package; far from Nineties minimalism, the Velvet is as modern as they come.

If you’re dizzy from looking down, the views of the city are at their finest from the rooms on the top floors, with the rakishly sloping glass walls exposed to the sky as much as the street. This street is the heart of Berlin Mitte’s nightlife, with no shortage of bars and restaurants, but the hotel’s own Velvet Lounge and the Austrian-inspired Lutter & Wegner restaurant are strong contenders as well — surprisingly warm environments fitted in oak and leather, in stark contrast to the building’s metallic front.
