Description:

Upon completion in 1918, Hotel Gellért was Budapest's grandest luxury hotel, an Art Nouveau monument, with a slightly Eastern feel, owing to Hungary's Ottoman history. The location is excellent, with access to the shopping and commercial districts, and in plain view of the Liberty Bridge. And, more importantly, this spot is home to the hot springs that feed Gellért Bath, Hungary's most famous Turkish spa, to which hotel guests have full access.

Truthfully, the hotel's heyday was in the Twenties and Thirties, and visit today, expecting to be dazzled, might lead to disappointment, as the hotel has aged significantly, and some of its renovations have not been entirely true to the original design. Unlike some aging palaces, though, Gellért knows its best days are in the past, and instead of haughtily coasting on reputation, the feeling here is distinctly unpretentious.

For proof, just look at the room rates — a standard room starts well below €100, compared to the multiple hundreds a hotel like this would demand, were it in tip-top shape. A substantial renovation might someday return this hotel to that elite category, but until then, the luxury market's loss is the budget traveler's gain. This hotel is an artifact of a bygone era, and it still retains much of its charm, as rough around the edges as it may be. Budapest itself is a strange confluence of the new and the old, and an exciting destination, far less crowded than Prague, with a culture and cuisine all its own. And the Gellért is a unique hotel, certainly appealing (Formica and all) — just know what you are getting into before you arrive, and you will not be disappointed.
